Media Literacy Now is thrilled that the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine today is endorsing our work of over 10 years, calling for media literacy in grades K-12.

The National Academies brought together an expert committee to examine the risks and benefits of various forms of online media and the consequences of their use in adolescence. In the Consensus Study Report, the committee called for state Boards of Education to set media literacy standards for grades K-12.

“Media Literacy Now has been working toward the goal of comprehensive media literacy education in k-12 schools for more than 10 years, and today several states have already begun the process, as a result of our advocacy,” said Erin McNeill, founder and CEO of Media Literacy Now. “Media literacy education is nothing short of a 21st century life skill. Today, it is a survival skill for young people.”

The specific recommendation:
“The U.S. Department of Education should draw national attention to the importance of comprehensive digital media literacy and state boards of education should set standards for the same in grades K through 12.”
